At Hillside School, we provide a strong foundation in the core learning areas. Students engage in a minimum of two hours of Reading and Writing each day, alongside a dedicated hour of Mathematics.
We take an integrated approach to teaching and learning, connecting subjects wherever possible in line with the evolving curriculum. This helps students make meaningful connections across different areas of learning.
Our programmes are designed to be relevant and engaging, linking learning to students’ lives, experiences, and their place in the wider world. We also incorporate inquiry-based, student-directed learning opportunities to encourage curiosity, independence, and the development of higher-order thinking skills.
Programmes are tailored to meet individual learning needs, ensuring all students are supported and challenged appropriately. Extension opportunities are provided to engage and stretch more able learners.
These opportunities may include participation in a range of academic and extracurricular events such as the University Maths Problem Challenge, Kiwi Maths Competition, Kiwi English Competition, Australian Maths Competition, speech competitions, Science Fair, SMAC Maths, and the Kids’ Lit Quiz.
We have a Year 4-8 Camp every second year, alternating between Deep Cove and Wellington.
All students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of sporting opportunities throughout the year.
Our annual Athletics Day is held in Term 1 in Winton, alongside Hedgehope, Lochiel, and Wallacetown schools. In Term 2, students also participate in Cross Country with these schools.
We also provide swimming lessons each year at the local Central Southland pool, helping students build confidence and develop essential water safety skills.
Additional sporting opportunities include events such as Central Cup, where students can experience and participate in a variety of sports. Hillside School also supports involvement in other sports such as touch, volleyball, and basketball.
We encourage all students to get involved, develop their skills, and enjoy being part of a team.
Please note: Parents and caregivers are responsible for transport to and from sporting events.
